Nanshan Statues are located on the southeast hillside of nanshan mountain in nanshan
village, pingyao town. It is a national key cultural relics protection unit. In Yuan dynasty, Monks engaged craftsmen to carve shallow niche relief statues on the earlier quarrying mountain surface. There were more than 30 statues originally, while over half of them were destroyed in the 1970s after villagers blewing up the mountains to take stones. Now 13 statues remain intact. All of them are Buddhist statues except the westmost one that is a Taoist statue. Nanshan statues are elegant, proportionally balanced, vividly and sleekly portrayed with varied expressions and are also clear fated. They are valuable art treasures and provide significant evidences for the study of the politics, economy, society, history, art and culture of Yuan Dynasty. In 2013, it was included in the seventh batch of key national cultural relics protection units.
